Worried about losing staff?

The main reasons staff leave are not financial.

Some staff turnover is healthy, too much indicates management issues.

Managing staff turnover

The biggest worry for most businesses, according to a recent NZ survey, is their ability to retain key staff. Yet most staff leave not because of financial rewards, the factor least easy to address, but because of the way they are managed.

Common causes of the decision to leave;

  • Role ambiguity - the job isn't as expected
  • Role mismatch - skills under-utilised
  • Unsatisfactory supervisor relationship
  • Issues with work mates
  • Work overload
  • Lack of resources
  • Lack of opportunity
  • Lack of recognition
  • Perceived unfairness
Conversely very low staff turnover may mean that you are not addressing poor performance. New staff bring new ideas - so some staff turnover is adaptive.
